Stay on Track During Summer Vacation

Summer is officially here! Normally, the sunnier days make eating right and exercising regularly a little easier. But, for those traveling or going on vacation, summer can be a tough time for achieving goals.

Your days spent relaxing on the beach, exploring new places, or taking part in summer barbecues doesn’t mean that weight loss and fitness have to be challenging. Prepare for success on your upcoming vacation with these tips.

Eating on Vacation

  1. Prepare meals and snacks ahead of time. A little preparation with a few nutritious meals and snacks is helpful no matter if you’re flying or driving, staying in a hotel or in a rental home. Pack enough dry snacks and meals so you can be sure to get at least one healthy meal in each day.   2. Look for a kitchen. If possible, book your stay at a place where you will have access to a kitchen or fridge. One of the easiest ways to keep your meals in check while on vacation is to make them yourself. With a full-sized kitchen, you can make most of your meals and eat as you normally would at home (with the added bonus of saving some money). However, even with a simple minifridge, bringing along more nutritious foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, is much easier.
  3. Plan your “splurge” meal or “treat.” You’re on vacation, you deserve to treat yourself a little. The key is to plan that treat so you’re not telling yourself this every chance you get. Before you even get to your destination, decide when and what you plan to splurge on. This way it’s something you can look forward to, making it easier to stay on track during the rest of your vacation.

Fitness on Vacation

  1. Come prepared. Bring the essentials for working out (running shoes, workout clothes, and a workout plan). There’s no way you’ll get a good workout in without bringing what you need. Do your research on where you’re going, decide what types of workouts you may want to do, and pack accordingly. Whether it’s a hike at a nearby trail, yoga on the beach, or a quick body weight workout in your hotel room—you will be more likely to include fitness on your vacation if you come prepared.
  2. Plan fun activities. Make fitness a part of your vacation. Plan a day to do some fun activities that don’t feel like your normal workout routines, but still involve being active. Think about what your whole group will enjoy—ideas include paddle boarding, beach volleyball, water sports, hiking, walking tours, and much more.
  3. Consider exercise when booking your stay. Consider your location and/or the amenities included at your hotel or rental when planning your vacation exercise routine. If you’re staying at a hotel, try to book one with a gym. If you’re at a rental, look to find one near the beach, a park, or any other area you can use for workouts. No matter how small your space, there’s always a way to get in a quick workout.

While each of these tips might seem a bit obvious, you might be surprised how often travelers don’t take advantage of them. Enjoy a healthy summer vacation! Go ahead and indulge a little, but don’t let traveling and fun get in the way of your overall health goals!
